Derek and I decided to take a hike up the Hassayampa River to Box Canyon just north of Wickenburg, AZ. Derek had invited one of his friends to go with us. On Friday at about noon we got dropped off in the river with arrangements to be picked up on Sunday afternoon. This was also Titan's (our puppy) first over night backpacking trip. We followed the river about 4 1/2 miles to Box Canyon and found a suitable campsite. After resting for about 30 minutes we started to setup camp. Derek learned a very valuable lesson this weekend in checking to make sure all gear gets packed. His friend had forgotten to pack their tent. Fortunately Derek had the tent fly and the poles. We were able to setup the fly to at least give them some shelter. This was Derek's first trip in leading. He chose the campsite and guided the majority of the trip. (I played the part of the inexperienced hiker). He did very well, except for making sure his friend had their tent.
Titan did well during the hiking part. The camping part not so well. At about 2 AM Titan decided it was play time and got curious to see what was inside of Derek's and his friend's packs. Then decided that their belongings should be strewn about the campsite. At about 4 AM Titan finally decided to calm down and let us go back to sleep. At about 6:30 AM Titan decided it was time for everyone to wake up. Derek and his friend had never been to Box Canyon before and was able to explore and have a good time. All in all it was a good trip. Derek learned a lot and I became a little more confident in his navigation skills. Hopefully Titan will get better with the camping soon. I am now going to get some much needed rest.
Hope to see you on a trail soon,
